The Royal Mint has introduced a new commemorative coin featuring the late pop icon George Michael.
Available in gold, silver, and silver, red and black, the coin shows Michael wearing the aviator sunglasses and cross-shaped earring from the video for his 1987 solo single Faith, along with a guitar fretboard. The back features an engraving of the song’s refrain.
George Michael Entertainment expressed profound gratitude for the tribute from the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, stating that the artist would have been deeply moved by this national institution's decision to honor his memory in such a manner.
Sandra Deiana, the coin's designer, aimed for a detailed portrait capturing Michael's charismatic expression, with a specific focus on his iconic sunglasses. This coin becomes the latest addition to the Royal Mint's Music Legends series, joining the ranks of legendary artists like David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen.
George Michael's early years were spent in Edgware, London, before his family relocated to Radlett, Hertfordshire, in the 1970s. At the time of his passing in 2016, he was residing in Goring, Oxfordshire. Notably, the singer-songwriter is commemorated with a blue plaque at Bushey Meads School, where he began his musical journey.
Steve Stunt, representing the George Michael Appreciation Society of Bushey, expressed enthusiasm for the collectible coin, having requested one from the Royal Mint multiple times in recent years. He hailed it as a fantastic and memorable tribute, appreciating the acknowledgment from the Royal Mint.
